I couldn't get my desktop to connect to the internet or recognize my network last night. It was pretty odd, because.
1. Wired/unwired laptops could connect.
2. The ethernet card's lights were on and it was plugged into the
A.Router at first
B. Plugged directly into the cable modem.
C. The cat 5 cable for another cat 5 cable that was working for my laptop.
D. back into the router.
3. The lights were on the card and the router to indicate that it was working.
4. Also, I rebooted my desktop a whole bunch of times during all of this and even took it apart to make sure that the ethernet card was correctly seated in the slot and I even cleaned out the dust and the fan.
5. The connection on my laptop was working all night, but just after midnight it stopped.
6. I unplugged the router for 15 seconds and both the laptop and desktop started working again.
My final theory is that there was some sort of River Troll living in my router. It also put some of its crap in my desktop's card and resetting the router scared him and his stuff off.
It seems to be resolved, but anyone have any ideas as to a better cause?
